Abdelhak Nouri: Ajax to pay family £6.5m for inadequate medical care

Ajax is set to pay Abdelhak Nouri and his family £6.5m after the midfielder suffered brain damage due to the lack of medical care provided by the club. Nouri made his senior debut for the club in 2016-17 but had his career cut short when he suffered cardiac arrest in a friendly game against Werder Bremen. He was rushed to hospital after being revived on the pitch but suffered permanent brain damage from the incident.

Ajax later acknowledged liability of the consequences admitting that the medical care was inadequate during the incident. The club continued to pay the player until his contract was terminated in March 2020.

“We all realize that the suffering for Abdelhak and his loved ones is not over. It remains a very sad situation, that’s how we feel here at Ajax too,” general manager Edwin van der Sar said in a statement about Abdelhak Nouri. “We greatly appreciate the way the family takes care of Abdelhak day and night with a lot of love and attention. When I visit him, I am always welcomed with open arms by the family. That also applies to other Ajax colleagues and we appreciate that enormously.”
