Brazil: Pele responding well to treatment for respiratory infection

Brazil legend Pele is responding to his treatment for a respiratory infection according to doctors. The Sao Paulo hospital affiliated with Albert Einstein reported on Saturday that the Brazilian legend was responding well and that his health had not deteriorated during the previous 24 hours. It comes in response to a report from the Brazilian daily newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, which said that Pele had been transferred to palliative care and was only receiving treatment for minor symptoms like discomfort and shortness of breath. In September 2021, the 82-year-old underwent surgery to remove a tumor. As part of a “reassessment of chemotherapy therapy” for his colon malignancy, he has been in the hospital since Tuesday.

“I want everyone to be composed and upbeat,” Brazil legend Pele said on Instagram. “I continue to receive the recommended treatment since I am strong and upbeat. For the care I have got, I would like to thank the entire medical and nursing team. I firmly believe in God, and the encouraging words I receive from people all around the world encourage me and give me courage. Observe the World Cup game featuring Brazil.”

On Saturday, Harry Kane, the captain of England, joined others in wishing Pele well, describing him as “an influence in our game, a fantastic footballer, and an incredible guy.” With 77 goals in 92 games, Pele is still Brazil’s all-time greatest scorer. Pele won the World Cups in 1958, 1962, and 1970.

“I always feel like I’m someone who is continuously learning and will continue to improve for the rest of my career since he said such things to me back then, and he was really on the money with his advise. Of course, hearing that news is terrible, but I, along with the entire England team, wish him well,” England captain Harry Kane said.
