Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen question Qatar hosting the WC

Manchester United teammates Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen have questioned Qatar hosting the World Cup. In the competition, the two will represent Portugal and Denmark, respectively. On November 20, hosts Qatar will play Ecuador. But since Qatar was chosen to host the finals in 2010, there has been controversy surrounding the decision, with the prohibition of same-sex partnerships being one of the main points of contention. Concerns regarding the plight of low-paid migrant laborers hired to build the nation’s infrastructure in the Gulf have also hampered the development. FIFA urged World Cup teams in a letter this week to concentrate on the competition in Qatar and avoid moralizing or inserting football “into every ideological or political dispute that exists.”

“In the recent weeks and months, we have seen the surrounds and heard about the fatalities associated with the stadium building. That has not made us happy,” Bruno Fernandez said. “Everyone should be able to play football and participate in the World Cup. Everyone should watch the World Cup. Who matters not? I believe that such events should never take place. However, a World Cup that is more than just a football tournament and is a joy to watch should be handled properly.”

“I am eager about the World Cup since I have worked so hard for it. It’s been brought up frequently. Football, no matter where it is. Having qualified, we will just play football,” Christian Eriksen said agreeing with teammate Bruno Fernandes. “I completely concur with Bruno. The World Cup’s history and location in Qatar are hot topics at the moment. It hasn’t developed correctly. Politics is about something above us, and we are football players. We make an effort to speak up and take action. Despite our best efforts, nothing will change until something else changes.”
