Celtic: Ange Postecoglou ‘curious’ over Rangers comparisons

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou is curious about the opponent’s tendencies to compare them with Rangers. After being questioned about Aberdeen’s cautious strategy on Saturday, the former head coach of Australia brought up the matter. With 33 shots on goal and 80% of the possession, Celtic outperformed the opposition, which only managed two off-target attempts and failed to win a corner. Jim Goodwin, the manager of the Dons, said after Celtic’s dramatic 1-0 victory that he had taken lessons from a recent trip to Ibrox where his team lost 4-1 despite his resolve to assault Rangers.

“I don’t really think so, and I don’t see anything wrong with that. Since every manager attempts to do that, I think Jim put up his team to try and get a result against us,” Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou said. “The strange thing is that, before we play the opposition, I hear opposing managers and opposition players say that they cannot tell us from Rangers at all. I believe this has more to do with language than anything else, and it is somewhat driven by you people in the media. It almost seems like, ‘This is what happens when you play the top two.’ Some of them even refer to it as an excursion when discussing it. You enter Glasgow, and this is what you anticipate.”

“I don’t get it, because if I said that “when we play the other 10 this is what happens,” I wouldn’t be respectful of the fact that Livingston will present a different challenge on Wednesday than St Johnstone did on the weekend,” he added. “Despite playing defensively, they do so in a variety of ways. Playing at home is not the same as playing elsewhere. As a result, we treat every game as a jumping race and respect every obstacle. You don’t turn and ignore the next one just because you are a few lengths in front.”
