Nottingham Forrest made it to the playoff final as they produced one of the narrow football scores of the weekend in the Championship. Brennan Johnson opened the scoring in the 19th minute to help Forrest lead by two goals on aggregate. Sheffield United fought back in the second half when Morgan Gibbs-White scored in the 47th minute before John Fleck equalized in the 75th minute.
Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper: “My feeling at the moment is one of joy. I’m really pleased for the club and players to get to the next step, but obviously, nothing is completed. You need a lot to get through these semi-finals. You need to play well, suffer and have a bit of luck. At times we haven’t played so well, but I’ve never seen teams be outstanding over two legs in the playoffs so I’m not ashamed of that one bit. The most important thing is that we’re through. We’ve been brilliant this season. We gave automatics a real push. We were outstanding at the weekend and that’s helped us get over the line. But these playoffs are a little bit different and you have to do a bit of everything to get through, and that’s what we’ve done.”
Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom: “The result and the fact I know we’re out, I don’t think that’s sunk in yet. The overriding feeling is one of pride. The performance today epitomizes all the work we’ve put in. I think the fans will be proud. I wanted us to show fight and be proud. We never wanted to go out with a whimper, and we did that. All the way throughout the game it was end to end. It must have been fantastic viewing. But now we have to go again. It’s a big congratulations to Steve and Forest, they’ll go into the game we wanted to be in, and unfortunately, we can’t be there.”
