Chelsea defeated Manchester City 2-1

In the last game of the 31st round of the Premier League, Chelsea defeated Manchester City 2-1 (1-0), giving Liverpool its 18th English title seven rounds before the end, and the first one after 30 years of waiting.

With 86 points Liverpool finished 23 points clear of Manchester City’s defending champions, potentially winning their first title since the creation of the Premier League (1992). The ‘Reds’ won their last championship back in 1990, and have finished in second place five times since.

They were closest to last season’s title when they were left without a trophy under current coach Juergen Klopp, though collecting as many as 97 points, just one less than Guardiola City. Not even a year later, Liverpool came back even stronger and they finally won that long-awaited trophy in the domestic championship, after winning the Champions League last year.

Celebrating seven rounds before the end for Liverpool fans and a direct clash with Manchester City allowed Chelsea, who began their 16th victory in the season in front of Stamford Bridge’s empty stands in the 36th minute when American of Croatian origin Christian Pulisic took advantage of the indecision of the last two defensemen.

Manchester City snatched the ball from them and the race across half the field ended with a perfect shot in the visiting goal’s lower-left corner.

The city had reached a big turnaround in nearly two minutes in the second half. After 55 minutes Kevin De Bruyne tied the game at 1-1 when he converted an incredible pass from the right. Raheem Sterling managed to complete the transfer-2 minutes into the game.

The decision goal fell in the 78th minute after Chelsea was awarded a penalty kick, and Fernandinho was sent off because he played with his hand intentionally to prevent a goal. It was Willian who was exact from the white spot. Croatian national team player Mateo Kovačić has been playing for Chelsea since he substituted Barkley in the 73rd minute.

Chelsea stayed in fourth place with 54 points in the Champions League battle, with a five-point advantage over Manchester United. Manchester City has remained at 63 points, 23 less than the new champions in Liverpool. Third, Leicester has 55 points.
