Donald Trump claims he won’t watch football matches

President Donald Trump is not pleased with the US Soccer Federation ‘s decision to lift a ban on kneeling players.

Donald Trump says that if athletes aren’t present for the national anthem, he won’t watch NFL or USA soccer matches.

The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) voted this week to remove a rule requiring players to stand up before games while playing The Star-Spangled Banner.

USSF adopted this strategy after Megan Rapinoe kneeled in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick who kneeled for the first time in 2016 to protest police violence and black people ‘s systemic injustice and colored people in America.

Republican congressman Matt Gaetz tweeted on Thursday: “I would prefer the US not to have a soccer team, rather than a soccer team that is not going to stand for the National Anthem.”

President Trump responded to a tweet with a story about Gaetz ‘s comments by posting: “I will no longer watch much!”

In response to another tweet on the topic, Trump wrote: “And it looks like the NFL is heading in that direction too, but not watching with me!”

The topic of kneeling became once more a hot subject after last month ‘s death of George Floyd while in Minneapolis police custody.
Several high-profile NFL players, including Patrick Mahomes and Michael Thomas, created a powerful video calling on the league to condemn racism and acknowledge that it was wrong “to silence our players from peacefully protesting.’

Additionally, a video from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the NFL was “wrong not to listen to NFL players earlier,” as he said they were able to protest peacefully.

Although there was no direct reference to taking a knee or not standing for the anthem, Trump repeated his position on the matter.

He tweeted: “Could it be even remotely possible that in the rather interesting statement of peace and reconciliation by Roger Goodell, he intimated that it would now be O.K. for KNEEL ‘s players, or not, to stand for the National Anthem, thus disrespecting our country and our flag?”

Drew Brees apologized after criticizing players kneeling during the anthem, saying he understood that the protest type was “not an American flag issue.”
