Ellen White, the winner of Euro 2022, announces her retirement

Ellen White, a striker for England and the champion of Euro 2022, has declared her retirement from the game.

The revelation was made by the 33-year-old in a touching tweet.

White said: “This decision has always been one I have wanted to make on my terms. And this is my time to say goodbye to football and watch the next generation shine.”

White started every game and scored twice as the Lionesses won the European Championships this summer, bringing her total for her nation to 52 goals with 113 caps.

She scored six goals at the 2019 competition while playing for England at three Euros and three World Cups.

“Ellen has sacrificed so much for England and we are all so proud of her,” said Sarina Wiegman, head coach of the women’s team for England. Although I have just had the privilege of working with her for the past year, I have no doubts about her professionalism, productivity, or capacity to complete tasks.

“This summer, she did an amazing job for the team, she is the perfect team player and helped the younger players to find their way in international football. I already knew she was a great player but I found an even better person. We will miss her, but I fully understand her decision to take a new direction.”

Prior to winning the FA Cup once more with Manchester City in 2020, White won the WSL and FA Cup twice with Arsenal. The next year, she committed to a two-year contract with City, although she won’t finish it.

Baroness “Ellen White will be remembered for a very long time as a model for others to follow,” said Sue Campbell, the FA’s director of women’s football. It is about the standards she set and the way she conducts herself, not simply about her record-breaking 52 goals and on-field accomplishments.

“A true leader of women, it has never been about Ellen White for her – even when she was scoring the crucial goals or giving everything she had, it was always the team first. She is a legend of the modern game.”

At one of England’s domestic autumn games, the FA intends to honour White’s career.
