Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta believes that his side had nothing to offer during their 2-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle. The result meant that the Gunners are dependent on Norwich beating their North London rivals on the last day of the season. Arsenal went behind to a Ben White own goal and hardly troubled their opponents thereafter. Bruno Guimaraes sealed the win late in the game.

“It was a really difficult night to swallow. Newcastle deserved to win the match comfortably, they were much better than us from the beginning to the last minute. We had nothing in the game,” Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said. “They were much better in every department. We were poor with the ball. A lot of things happened during the night, with the substitutions we had to make through injuries, but it’s not an excuse. Newcastle deserved to win the match.”

“I’m extremely disappointed. That Newcastle were 10 times better than us and fully deserved the match,” he added. “The performance was nowhere near the level if we want to play in the Champions League. When you see the team we have at the moment there are a lot of question marks in a lot of different positions, because of the injuries and suspensions we had. But it is not an excuse. Today we weren’t at the races.”

“If someone isn’t ready for this game, stay at home, as simple as that. It doesn’t matter your age, you can be 30, 35, 10, 18 – if you’re not ready for that, stay on the bench, stay at home, don’t come here,” Granit Xhaka said. “We need people to have the balls to come here and play because we knew this game is one of the most important for us. To perform like this is not acceptable. It’s very, very sad for us, very disappointing and I feel very sorry for the people who came here to support us.”
