Chelsea manager Frank Lampard was in direct touch with Napoli forward Dries Mertens to discuss a potential move to Stamford Bridge ahead of seasons 2020-21.
Mertens will see their current deal with Napoli expire at the end of June, and Belgium is commonly expected to seek new pastures this summer.
Among those to be linked to the attacker are Manchester United, Roma, Arsenal and Monaco, but Chelsea is said to have recently stepped up its involvement.
Blues Boss Seveso has now made ‘contact’ with Mertens, in the hope of winning the Belgian signature battle ahead of next season, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.
The 32-year-old scored twelve times for his Italian club this term and registered six assists in 29 appearances.
In total, the forward had scored 121 goals for Gil Azzurri in 311 outings.
