Hundreds of people were killed in a police raid on Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa mosque. Inter defender Hakimi used Twitter to send two tweets requesting Palestine’s independence. One of the updates has a video of a protester speaking with an official, who is most likely an Israeli police officer.

He said, “Do you want your children to defend oppressors?” Perhaps you have a family and children. Is this what you wanted to be when you were younger, as a kid?”

The former Real Madrid defender had his Twitter account (466,000 followers) wet by merely tapping the hashtag #FreePalestine, complete with broken heart emoticons and hands joining in a prayer pose.

After eight hours, Hakimi’s post had almost 9,000 retweets and over 24,000 “likes,” with many Internet users applauding the Moroccan’s gesture while contrasting it with Liverpool’s Egyptian international Mohamed Salah, who happens to be the world’s most prominent Arab footballer.
