Alloa defender Fernandy Mendy expressed his excitement in having the chance to go up against Mohamed Salah at the AFCON after a surprise call-up in December. Mendy was a late callup for the Guinea-Bissau squad. The defender was set to face Airdrie in the Scottish League One when he got the call that was an early Christmas gift.

“I took the call and he told me I was going to AFCON. I was very happy, very surprised,” Fernandy Mendy said about his AFCON callup. “That was two days before Christmas, I saw it as an early Christmas gift. It’s amazing, I’m just proud to be there. I sat on the sofa for 10 minutes not moving, I then called my agent first because my wife was sleeping. I then called my dad and I think he was happier than me.”

“He’s one of the best players in the world so he has his qualities and I have mine,” he said about the chance to face Mohamed Salah. “Mo is much better than me so I’ll just try to do my best and try to stop him. I have teammates and they’re going to help me. If I can’t catch him, someone else will catch him. Just being in the squad is amazing. I’m just going to enjoy the moment and try to get into the team. Normally players can’t stop Mo Salah but we’re going to try and do our best.”
