Barcelona defender Jordi Alba scored one goal and set up another to spark a 2-1 comeback win over Real Sociedad, depriving the Spanish league lead of the Basque Countryside on Wednesday.
In the 32nd minute, Alba canceled Willian Jose’s opener by curling in a shot. When he crossed for Frenkie de Jong to score, the left-back then helped the hosts take the lead a minute before half-time.
The outcome changed the order of Sociedad, Atletico Madrid, and Real Madrid, all at the top of the table on points level and divided only by goal difference. Atletico is now in the first spot, Sociedad in second place, and Madrid in seventh.
The victory in Barcelona boosted their chance to reach the tightly-contest title race. The Lionel Messi team climbed to seventh, six points ahead of the front-runners. Concerning Sociedad, Atletico has three games in hand, Barcelona two, and Madrid one.
“This was our best game of the season, I think,” said Alba.
“It is difficult to play without fans due to COVID-19 restrictions), but it was more than enough incentive to play against a great team. Our mood was terrific tonight. We saw Barça battling for every ball as if it were our last.”
