After the winger made his debut as a replacement in the 4-0 victory against Real Sociedad on Thursday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claims Amad Diallo is close to making his first appearance for Manchester United.
In January, the 18-year-old joined United from Atalanta and has been playing for the reserves of the club as he adapts to his new home.
Diallo played the last 32 first-leg matches against Sociedad for the final seven minutes of the Europa League after replacing Mason Greenwood and Solskjaer says shortly he will be offered a larger part.
“He’s getting closer and closer to his minutes by the day,” Solskjaer told BT Sport. “That is why we felt towards the end when we were 3-0 up to go and let him enjoy his first 10 minutes for the club.”
He added to reporters at a press conference: “After Newcastle [on Sunday], we will decide on [his first start].”
“He’s had a couple of games in the reserves and there’s still a few players on the bench that would want to start of course but Amad is getting closer we’ll see how much game time he will get.”
United will turn their attention to the second leg of the tie against Sociedad after Sunday’s Premier League match against Newcastle.
Solskjaer says he will not be fielding a completely different starting XI, considering their comfortable lead.
“He said, “No, we’ve got to take one game at a time. First, Newcastle, but we’re going to put out a strong team because we’ve been through a tough spell about building momentum and I thought tonight we found ourselves.
I figured the boys had the zip in their legs again, so it was important to take off some players and rotate the team again. We’re certainly rotating, but we’re not going to take it lightly.
Twice for the Red Devils, Bruno Fernandes scored while Daniel James, who set one of the objectives of the Portuguese midfielder, and Marcus Rashford were both on the scoresheet.
