The midfielder was forced to sit in Friday’s battle against Dijon and is unlikely to report on France’s national team duty.
Lyon reported that Houssem Aouar positively checked Covid-19 ahead of the 2020-21 Ligue 1 opening game of the season.
Rudi Garcia was forced to leave a key performer behind by his plans to meet Dijon at Groupama Stadium on Friday night.
The French playmaker was the only player in the Lyon squad to test positive for coronavirus after the club’s current round of medical tests, and he was placed in quarantine for the next 14 days.
Lyon announced the news in an official statement on their website which reads: “Olympique Lyonnais confirms that a new test was organized by all its players and professional staff on Thursday 27 August in anticipation of the match against Dijon at Groupama Stadium.
“The results obtained this morning from the club’s medical management confirmed that Houssem Aouar is the only player in the squad to have put Covid-19 to the test for positive.
“As soon as the findings were clear Houssem was removed for a fortnight despite remaining completely asymptomatic. Olympique Lyonnais may also claim that contamination of the player has taken place outside the club. Houssem Aouar will return within 10 to 15 days to first-team squad training, depending on his next follow-up tests.”
Aouar will not be qualified to feature Lyon in their next outing in Bordeaux on September 11 and is also likely to be excluded from France’s Didier Deschamps squad for the UEFA Nations League against Sweden and Croatia scheduled for September 5 and 8, respectively.
Aouar was first called up to Les Bleus along with Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig and Rennes teenager Eduardo Camavinga.
But he’ll be available for selection again when Garcia’s men embark on a September 15 trip to Montpellier, awaiting a clean health bill.
Lyon isn’t the only Ligue 1 club to see their plans for the new season of Covid-19 interrupted, with Marseille forced to reschedule a clash with Saint-Etienne last week after revealing four promising cases inside their squad.
