Arsene Wenger, the legendary former Arsenal boss, claimed that both Juventus and Barcelona were too dependent on Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
In the first leg of their round-of-16 tie, Juventus suffered a 2-1 Champions League loss to Porto at the Estadio do Dragao on Wednesday.
Ronaldo, 36, had a disappointing night as he had to collect the loose ball for a moment and try to launch a counterattack, only so that Alex Sandro will not get out of his way.
Messi was on the losing side in the Champions League, just like the Juventus superstar, as Paris Saint-Germain thumped Barcelona 4-1 at Camp Nou.
Former Arsenal head coach Arsene Wenger spoke with beIN Sports about the role of Cristiano Ronaldo at Juventus, as well as the place of Lionel Messi at Barcelona.
– Are you afraid that Juventus depends too much on Ronaldo? You don’t think that’s a risk?
“I don’t think that this is a possibility. The issue is that only Ronaldo relies on Juventus. This whole scenario just shows that it’s not good enough for the players playing alongside him. They aren’t at the stage they need to be.
For Messi, the same goes. If the team relies on him too much, it means that the Barca players aren’t good enough.”
The 33-year-old Argentine forward shot Barca from the spot-kick into the lead, but a hat-trick inspired by Kylian Mbappe secured the French side’s strong comeback.
In Barcelona, the future of Messi remains unclear as his deal will expire in the summer and he has been connected with a summer move to PSG.
Wenger, who was an expert at beIN SPORTS, said Juventus relied too heavily on Ronaldo and it revealed that the “players around him just aren’t good enough.”
