Scoring with seven minutes left, Aston Villa’s substitute Ahmed El Mohamady gave his beleaguered side a possible lifeline for relegation, as they gained a crucial point in a 1-1 Premier League draw at Newcastle United on Wednesday.

Villa will be strengthened by their fightback, as they remained in the bottom two at St James’ Park after Dwight Gayle put the home team in front in the 68th minute.

Newcastle, who defeated Sheffield United 3-0 in their first game on Sunday after the COVID-19 lockdown, remained in 13th position as they advanced to 39 points from 31 matches. Villa has 27 points, having drawn from the playoffs two out of three played in seven days after returning to action.

Norwich City’s slim survival aspirations were dealt a blow as Everton kept alive their European football dreams thanks to a Michael Keane header. Daniel Farke ‘s side at the bottom of the table went into the 19th-place six-point adrift game and had to force a victory to close the gap.

In the first half, Farke ‘s four changes irritated Everton as the visitors held at bay but, Keane’s nodded goal at the beginning of the second half gave the Toffees the lead.

The 27-year-old defender found himself unmarked for his season’s second Premier League goal and was able to push a corner in the Norwich net past Tim Krul.

Before the game, Carlo Ancelotti said he believed that his side’s European qualification was a fair target, and the win took them a step closer to raising a gap while Norwich ‘s battle against the target continued.

The Canaries scored just once in their last seven matches.

Another Adama Traore-Raul Jimenez display gave Wolverhampton Wanderers a precious 1-0 win over the Premier League battle of Bournemouth on Wednesday.

In an almost identical image of Saturday’s opener against West Ham United, Jimenez reached Traore ‘s charging run and inch-perfect cross over the hour for his 15th league goal of the season.

The victory put them at 49 points in the sixth position, the same number as fifth-placed Manchester United that has the best difference in goal. Pending the results of Manchester City ‘s second-placed appeal against a UEFA suspension, a Champions League berth may likely be offered in fifth place this season.
