With a 4-0 victory over Cádiz in the Spanish league on Monday, Athletic Bilbao ended a four-match winless run.
In the first half, Álex Berenguer scored twice and Unai López and Iñaki Williams added one goal for Athletic in each half.
In the league standings, the victory lifted the Basque Country club to 10th position.
It was Cádiz’s third straight defeat, slipping to 15th and remaining three points clear of the relegation zone. It is enduring a winless string of six matches in which it has been outscored 19-5.
After arriving at the beginning of the year, athletic coach Marcelino Garcia Toral, who revitalized the club, rested some regular starters after a difficult streak of matches in which he won the Spanish Super Cup and qualified for the semifinals of the Copa del Rey.
With two games in hand, Atlético Madrid has a five-point advantage at the top of the Spanish league standings.
