Barcelona declared their intention to appeal against the two-match suspension of forwarding Lionel Messi.

The Argentine was disciplined in the Spanish Super Cup match for hitting athletic striker Asier Villalibre from behind on his head (2-3). In 753 games for Blaugrana, Messi got his first red card.

Owing to his suspension, he will miss the Spanish Cup tie against Cornella and the La Liga tie against Elche.

Under the rules, if his kick was considered to be offensive behavior, Messi might have missed between four and 12 games. It was not suggested by the referee that the Barca forward was violent.
