In the January transfer window, Spanish giants Barcelona are reportedly plotting to sign Man Utd U23 star Arnau Puigmal. In the Red Devils’ setup, the Spaniard is seen as one of the best players. His U23 form has now seen him draw attention from Barcelona, who had previously attempted to sign him.
Barca will attempt to sign Puigmal when the window opens, according to the Spanish publication Sport. Puigmal is seen by Barca officials as a perfect player to bolster their B-team, which plays in the third tier in Spain. That would then allow the player to step up if coaches in Spain are impressed by him. On the U23 side, the study calls Puigmal “the most outstanding player,” hence the interest.
Puigmal is 19 years old and the latest campaign has had an exciting start.
In only his first two games, he has bagged three goals and two assists.
Puigmal is a central midfielder who came to Spain from the Espanyol Academy. When he was younger, Barca initially tried to sign him, but they were unsuccessful.
In 2017, he joined United but has yet to make his full debut. The player represents the U19 side of Spain and has made three appearances to date for them. In the Red Devils’ academy setup, he is one of a host of prospects.
Over the summer, the club signed two of Spain’s brightest young stars. Marc Jurado from Barcelona and Alvaro Fernandez from Real Madrid was brought in. Whether Puigmal would be tempted by a return to his native Spain is unclear. But in his decision, the available route to Solskjaer’s side will prove significant.
Currently, Academy graduates Brandon Williams and Mason Greenwood are acting as confirmation that the first team has a path. Players such as Scott McTominay and Tahith Chong have also risen through the ranks in the past.
