If they are to take the next step and win trophies after many semi-final losses under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Bruno Fernandes agrees that Manchester United must change.

In the last 13 months, United has lost four semi-finals, three of which have been since Fernandes signed, the last being the loss to City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Fernandes said there is still much to fight for this season and encouraged his teammates to learn from another defeat, acknowledging that United must continue to improve to win silverware.

He tweeted: “I’m very sad and disappointed not to have (sic) made the final again. We have a lot to fight yet but we have to learn and understand that we can’t make the same mistakes anymore. We need to make an effort to further improve and be able to fight for trophies!”

To justify comparisons with Eric Cantona, Fernandes was unusually ineffective against City and former United captain Roy Keane said the Portuguese would do better in the major games.

It’s not easy to win football trophies,” Keane told Sky Sports. Fernandes has had great praise, people have compared him to Cantona over the last few months.

But tonight, Fernandes didn’t do much; the top players show up on major occasions and that’s what the Cantona’s used to do to get their hands on the trophies.

They probably need one or two more players to come into the squad, no doubt, and the mentality – they need probably the confidence of winning a semi-final to get them over the line and then you need momentum, but they didn’t have it tonight.”
