Bruno Fernandes has received the Manchester United Player of the Year award for the second year in a row, but some of his teammates believe Luke Shaw should have won it.
After another impressive campaign, the Portuguese midfielder won the Sir Matt Busby award, receiving 63 percent of the votes from players and supporters.
Shaw finished second, followed by Edinson Cavani, Mason Greenwood, and Marcus Rashford in the top five. This season, the 25-year-old has been undoubtedly the best full-back in the Premier League. And several United players believe that the England international should have won ahead of Fernandes.
Both Scott McTominay and Aaron Wan-Bissaka voted for Shaw, but agreed it was a difficult decision because both players have been outstanding for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
“Who gets my vote?” McTominay said on Man Utd’s official website. “Luke Shaw, most likely. He’s been outstanding; truly exceptional. I mean, it’s sweet. It comes as no surprise to me that he’s been so successful.”
“I voted for Luke, but I guess Bruno was up there as well,” Wan-Bissaka continued.
“Luke has been the standout for me, putting in the work, and that motivates me to compete with him and pull out the best of all of us. He’s been upbeat the whole time, making the best of every opportunity. He hasn’t taken his foot off the accelerator. He has continued to drive himself until the whistle blows, and he has also aided the squad.”
Brandon Williams wouldn’t say who received his vote, but laughed that it didn’t go to Fernandes because he believes Rashford, Harry Maguire, and Shaw were the top three contenders for the nomination.
“I guess I won’t be able to choose only one because there have been so many,” he said. “Rashy, Luke, and Harry are potentially my top three. We just have three games remaining, so I’ll vote for the player who does the best in those three games. Bruno has been a main player, but I believe it’s those three because I don’t believe they get enough credit.”
Bruno gets all of the goals and assists, but the defense has vastly improved.
Both players deserved the honor, according to Juan Mata, but Fernandes just edged Shaw out.
