Carlo Ancelotti thought the European Super League was a joke when he first heard about it. He lauded Everton for caring about their fanbase and speaking out against the teams that were a part of the league. Everton issued a statement wherein they strongly condemned Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham; teams that were a part of the European Super League. Everton described the Big Six behavior as “preposterous arrogance” while “tarnishing the reputation of our league and the game”.
“My immediate reaction was they are joking, this is a joke!” Carlo Ancelotti said about the European Super League. “It’s a joke because it’s not going to happen. It’s impossible. Sports culture in Europe is different from American sports. Not because we are right and they are wrong, but because the culture of the people is different. In America, in the USA, sport is different. Sport is pure entertainment.”
“In Europe, we live with more passion. When we grow up, we want to beat our neighbors. We grew up differently. It is not sport [in the USA]. Football now is part of the business. But we need to take into consideration both.” he added. “Football is a sport first. And then with a lot of investment, it also becomes a business. We need to take into consideration both. This is absolutely normal in football.”
Ancelotti has managed 4 of the 12 clubs who were a part of the proposed Super League. He feels these clubs should have consulted the players, managers, and fans. Ancelotti admitted that a number of changes are required in football. He feels the UEFA Champions league needs to be more competitive than it is at this time. Reports suggested that the remaining 14 clubs were divided on the sanctions and punishment for the teams associated with the European Super League.
