After Bayern Munich decided not to buy, Chelsea emerged as a favorite to land Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho. The former Liverpool man spent the second half of this season loaning the German giants but they are not interested in getting £110million asking price.

Barcelona made it clear that after moving from Liverpool in January 2018, Coutinho was surplus to requirements after he failed to impress.

They are willing to hit the £105 m they paid upfront for the 27-year-old and could accept as little as £80 m as possible. But the coronavirus epidemic means that few clubs will be able to spend such large amounts in players after nearly three months of desperation for money.

Coutinho turned Leicester down and Newcastle, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur were all offered to him. And his agent Kia Joorabchian made it clear that he wants to return to the Premier League in South America.

He told Sky Sports: “It’s all a possibility. We had a long chat about it after the Champions League game he was playing in England [against Chelsea].

The Premier League is something in which he’s always enjoyed playing, loved playing in, and undoubtedly would love to come back and play. The question is what will be the financial conditions at the end of this pandemic for all the clubs, including Barcelona and all the Premier League clubs.

Former United and Tottenham forward Dimitar Berbatov admits that it is “sad” that the stock of Coutinho has declined so badly, but suggests that the Red Devils will be moving away from No 10.

He told Betfair: “Coutinho is actually in a tough situation, he’s been doing so well in Liverpool, he’s been fantastic and he’s got a dream transfer to Barcelona that he’s pushing for.”
