Pau Torres revealed that he spoke to David de Gea after the Europa League Final and feels the penalty miss will not affect him. He has urged de Gea to lead them to Euro 2020 glory. Pau Torres scored a penalty for his side against David de Gea in the penalty shootout of the Europa League Final. It was a marathon shootout which Villareal won 11-10 after the Spanish goalkeeper missed his penalty.
“He has a strong mind, I spoke with him after the game and this won’t affect him,” said Torres. “It will stay in the past, I tried to encourage him as best as I could and told him not to worry about it because this summer he is going to lift a different trophy.”
De Gea is part of the provisional 24-man squad for the Euros but has not played for Spain since their defeat to Ukraine in the Nations League back in October. He will have to fight off competition from Atletic Bilbao’s Unai Simon and Brighton’s Robert Sanchez this summer.
Torres on the other hand has been in scintillating form for the Yellow Submarine. He has thrived under Unai Emery and is now a subject of continuous transfer speculation. Torres says he is relaxed about his future heading into the Euros. Spain has a relatively inexperienced squad for the tournament but Torres insists they are confident about winning. Spain is looking to repeat their win in Euro 2008 when their squad included legends, Xavi, Andres Iniesta, and David Villa.
“We have a squad of veterans and youngsters and we all have to try and be leaders, we’re all capable of doing that,” he said. “We’re candidates to win the European Championship and we’re ready to do that.”
