New Leicester Women head of football development Emile Heskey hopes the club can follow in their opponents this weekend. Leicester Women gained promotion to the top flight last season and will face WSL champions, Chelsea, this week. They also finished as runners-up to Barcelona in the Champions League last season. Heskey believes that patience will be needed as it is only the second season of the club turning professional.
“[They’ve] really backed their women’s football.” Leicester Women head of development Emile Heskey said. “Got a fantastic manager, great players. [That] is where you want to be, but they’ve been doing that for 10, 12 years. This is our second year professionally, so we’re building, and the fact the club is backing us this way is brilliant.”
“They’re very close to getting that first win, and that will just breed confidence,” he said. “The girls have been fantastic. We knew it was going to be a massive step up, and the manager knew that. But we have been playing well. That first result will be brilliant for us and will just be that stepping stone to go onto bigger and better things.”
“Even if it wasn’t me heading it all up, they’ve committed to it. I think the club has been fantastic, really putting their backing behind it.” he continued. “This is Leicester City, it’s not the men’s and the women’s. We want it to be the same and that’s something the club has said time and time again. I have a connection with the men’s side and a lot of people are still there from when I was playing, so I know a lot of these people.”
