Patrick Bamford has received his first England call-up after an outstanding season in the Premier League last season. Trent Alexander Arnold and Jesse Lingard have also been included in the squad for the World Cup qualifiers. All three missed out on the Euro 2020 squad with the former suffering an injury in a warm-up game. They will be available for the three qualifying games against Hungary, Andorra, and Poland.
“There was an opportunity for us in the forward area,” England boss Gareth Southgate said about Patrick Bamford. “We were very pleased with what Ollie Watkins did at the end of last season. Now is an opportunity for Patrick as a number nine as well. His progress with Leeds has been excellent, the very close thing at the end of last season with us [in terms of being selected] and this is a good chance for him to come back in. We worked with him at the U21 level, so we know him anyway. A fabulous moment for him and his family.”
Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood is a notable absentee from the squad along with Ben Chilwell. Southgate insists that Greenwood is firmly part of his plans and also revealed that he has already spoken to him.
“He is in our thoughts,” added Southgate. “I’ve spoken with him and with his club. He is a player we really like. We think he has got every possibility to be a top England player. We are all very conscious that we make that progress at the right time. He is just breaking into the team at Manchester United with a lot of responsibility.”
