Reece James revealed he has trained for three different roles ahead of Euro 2020. The Chelsea youngster is keen to know about his role in the tournament. James was one of the four fullbacks that Southgate had named in his squad for the Euros. Trent Alexander-Arnold suffered a thigh injury in the warm-up game that has ruled him out of the Euros. Ben White, his replacement is a center-back that can play in midfield if required. Reece James explained he had trained for center-back, right back, and right wingback for Euro 2020.
“[I’ve trained in] probably the positions you can guess,” Chelsea full back Reece James said. “Wing-back, center-back, right-back. I’ve played all three so far, so I don’t really know what’s going to happen or what position I might feature in.”
“I played right-side center-back many times coming throughout the academy so the position wasn’t new to me.” he added. “It’s much different to wing-back, you can’t really go forward. Wing-back you have the license to push on and join in attacks, but right side of a three you’re kind of limited to where you can go and what you can do.”
Ashley Cole has been a constant help to the budding full-back. James revealed that he speaks to Cole almost every week. The ex-Chelsea defender is part of the youth-set up at the club. James also explained how its been a struggle to fit into Thomas Tuchel’s plans. He was a regular starter under previous manager, Frank Lampard.
“At the start of the season we had Frank Lampard. I was very lucky to play the majority of the games under him, but when our new manager came in, our style of play changed and formation changed as well,” James said.
