Everton is looking to sign a center-back this summer as Carlo Ancelotti manager is very keen to help his defense in next season’s competition.
In recent weeks the Toffees have been tied to the likes of Marseille’s Boubacar Kamara, Lille’s Gabriel, Paris Saint-Germain’s Thiago Silva, Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma, and Manchester City’s John Stones, as well as former Chelsea player Branislav Ivanovic.
The Serbian defender led Russian giants Zenit St. Petersburg to the league title a couple of weeks ago but his contract has now expired.
Although the 36-year-old is still on the radar of Red Star Belgrade, Everton is making the moves and Ivanovic has told Republika that he has got a decent offer from the Toffees.
“I ‘m going to continue my career at Everton. I’ve got a decent offer from them. I ‘m going to see how it can work out,” the three-time Premier League told the website.
Although he’s past his peak years, he doesn’t seem to be slowing down, and a reunion with Ancelotti at Goodison Park could be on cards.
Ivanovic won’t be an instant starter at Everton, but he could be a top-quality cover and contest and his experience could be useful.
Interestingly, the Serbian can play right-back and right-of-a-three and this offers the Italian boss some tactical choices.
Landing Ivanovic for free and could be a gamble on a one-year contract that ends up paying off for Everton as the move is against their policy.
It may be important to have an old quality head in a dressing room full of youngsters.
