As French cup holder Paris Saint-Germain held on for a 1-0 victory at second-tier Caen in the round of 64 on Wednesday, Neymar limped off injured.
The Brazilian star was replaced by an hour of action, a few minutes after a strong challenge in the 54th-minute from behind by central defender Alexis Beka Beka. As he lay on the deck, Neymar clutched his left knee and went off moments later after trying to carry on playing.
After the match, PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino said Neymar had injured his adductor muscle.
With PSG facing Barcelona, Neymar’s former club, next week in the first leg of the 16th round of the Champions League, this is bad news for Pochettino.
Right now, it is hard to tell whether he would be eligible against Barcelona. We’ll see the doctor tomorrow (Thursday),’ said Pochettino. “Without having more data, it is hard to talk about his condition.”
PSG is already sweating on winger Angel Di Maria’s fitness, who injured his thigh against Marseille last Sunday.
In the first half, Caen did well, checking the goalie twice, and kept firm before striker Moise Kean put PSG’s 13-time Cup winner ahead early in the second half as he volleyed Neymar’s left-wing cross home.
Shortly afterward, Kean had another chance saved, but near the end, Caen should have equalized when substitute Caleb Zady Sery dragged his shot wide.
At second-division Grenoble, Monaco won 1-0 to make it eight straight wins in all competitions, while League leader Lille scored a seventh consecutive victory at Dijon with a 1-0 victory.
Attacking midfielder Stevan Jovetic scored for Niko Kovac’s side in the first half, while Guinea’s 19-year-old midfielder Aguibou Camara scored his first Lille goal.
Marseille also won 2-0 at second-division Auxerre in the round of 64 to end a seven-game winless streak.
Struggling striker Dario Benedetto scored just his fifth goal in 29 games this season, and after joining Senegalese club Diambars recently, Ahmadou Bamba Dieng’s took his first for Marseille.
Nantes lost 4-2 to Lens at home, despite news that after losing four and drawing four games after taking charge, coach Raymond Domenech had to be sacked.
