Madrid had the opportunity to close the gap on Atleti ahead of the derby on Sunday, but the draw left them in the third position with 53 points from 25 games, level with Barcelona in second and five points behind Diego Simeone’s champions, who have a game in hand. With 42 points, Sociedad remains in the fifth position.
