Dundee missed a penalty and a chance to cause one of the upset football results in the Scottish Premiership. Jason Cummings came on as a substitute in the second half and failed to convert his spot-kick after Joe Aribo had given Rangers the lead. Dundee manager James McPake was sent off after the final whistle for arguing the decision not to send McLaughlin off. Ryan Sweeney replaced Paul McGowan while Leigh Griffiths kept his place in the starting lineup despite being charged for “culpable and reckless conduct”. The win took Rangers to the summit of the Scottish Premiership while Dundee is still searching for their first win of the season.
Dundee manager James McPake: “In my opinion, no [McLaughlin should not have been on the pitch for the penalty]. I know the rule is if you make a genuine attempt, and people will disagree and say it’s a genuine attempt.” he added. “But Paul McMullan is clearly by him and the leg comes out. If it’s Adam Legzdins would my answer be different? Probably not.
“I am just giving an honest opinion. Having seen it back, I think the arm catches him as well. TV footage will maybe show that better. I am looking at it from a high camera.” he continued. “We miss the penalty but we would still have half an hour to play with 11 v 10. I like the rule that if you make a genuine attempt it’s not a red card offense, but Paul McMullan is clearly by him by the time he makes an attempt.”
