Preston pulled off one of the more surprising football results of the Championship as they came from behind to beat Swansea. The visitors dominated early on with Joel Piroe putting them ahead with 19 minutes on the clock. They were a little too complacent soon after scoring with Sepp van den Berg equalizing for the hosts.

The goal changed the complexion of the match with Preston changing gears. the pressure paid off when Emil Riis put the hosts into the lead with a neat finish in stoppage time of the first half. Ben Whiteman then put the game out of reach of the visitors with a brilliant free-kick on 52 minutes. The hosts protected their lead to picking up all three points.

Preston’s Frankie McAvoy: “Once we got the press right, we started to make things happen. After they scored, I have to credit the players, I thought they were excellent in terms of harassing and making it difficult for Swansea to play. I thought the response of the players was magic. I just felt how we pressed and harassed in the second half was excellent, it is everything we have worked on.”

Swansea’s Russell Martin: “I am really disappointed and didn’t see it coming. We scored a goal of real high quality but to let them score so soon is unforgivable. The goals we have conceded have really hurt me. When you go 1-0 up it is a chance to establish some control and the opposite has happened. We did not look after the ball well enough and were not aggressive enough to defend our box.”
