West Ham secured the top spot in Group H as they produced one of the comfortable football results of the Europa League. After Austria returned to completed lockdown following the rise in cases across the UK, the match was played in an empty stadium behind closed doors. Andriy Yarmolenko scored the opener with a header to help extend West Ham’s superb run in the competition in the 39th minute. Club Captain Mark Noble doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time from the penalty spot.
Teenage striker Sonny Perkins came on as a substitute for his Hammers debut and almost marked it with a goal when he met Vladimir Coufal’s cross with a fine header, but Gartler made a stunning reflex save and West Ham had to settle for two. David Moyes made a host of changes ahead of their weekend meeting with Man City in the Premier League.
West Ham boss David Moyes: “Job did, yeah. We did a professional job tonight and throughout the group stage, we’ve done a good job. It’s a great credit to the players for the way they have gone about the job for a group relatively new to Europe.” he added. “It’s something I’ve not taken in yet. I knew we could get the job done but I think tonight we have not played as well as we have done, but we did enough to get us through. It’s probably a good sign that I’m not totally pleased with the way we played but we’ve won relatively comfortably.”
