Tahith Chong was the best player on his comeback from injury as he helped Birmingham produce one of the narrow football scores of the weekend in the Championship. He opened the scoring in the second minute before Nico Gordon doubled their advantage in the 13th minute. Alex Scott pulled a goal back in the 48th minute but the hosts could not find the equalizer thereafter.
Bristol City’s Nigel Pearson: “I am fed up with saying the same things each week. Some of the current players lack personal drive, which is a concern. I know where we need to strengthen in the summer. People always think the players out of the side are the answer. We have a lot of good youngsters, but they are learning the game. Why some players freeze as they did today, I can’t tell you, but we are continually having to waste substitutions because individuals aren’t at it. There need to be changed to the squad, no doubt about that, but I will only make them if they are going to significantly improve what we have got.”
Birmingham’s Lee Bowyer: “It just shows what sort of season we might have had without all the injuries. We are the good side, but we have not been able to show it often enough because of all the team changes. That drives me crazy. Tahith has been out for four-and-half months. He was our most creative player before his injury and today, despite being rusty, he has scored and played well.”
