Max Bird scored on his 21st birthday to provide us with one of the most unexpected football scores in the Championship. He scored a stunning goal to help Derby fans after a terrible week. Derby will go into administration and incur a 12 point penalty. Ravel Morisson created the first chance for the hosts but Lee Buchanan had his shot saved at the near post. The visitors looked rusty with a number of misplaced passes but missed a golden opportunity to go ahead when Sam Clucas was denied by Graeme Shinnie.
Just when Stoke was getting their act together they were stunned by a brilliant strike from Bird who buried the ball into the top right corner from 25 yards out. Two minutes later, Davies beat the keeper at a corner to give Derby a two-goal lead. Tom Ince managed to score a goal for the visitors but it wasn’t quite enough to prevent defeat.
Derby’s Wayne Rooney: “I’ve said a few times I’m committed to this club and to the group of players and the staff, I care about them, so I’ll keep doing everything I can to help us get through this.” he added. “I think we will get through this for the better. We are going to have tough times ahead in the near future but it’s my job now to start rebuilding this club and trying to put it back together.”
Stoke’s Michael O’Neill: “Young players make mistakes and that was what happened today. We lose the goal and then we lose the second goal and at that point, I thought our reaction was poor but our reaction in the second half was excellent.”
