Patrick Bamford hopes to win a spot in England’s Euro 2020 squad after scoring one goal and setting up another as Leeds overcame Fulham.
Bamford was left out of Gareth Southgate’s team for the first World Cup qualifiers the day before.
Fulham, meanwhile, blew an opportunity to climb out of the Premier League relegation zone by losing their third game in a row.
Leeds saw two goals disallowed in the first half, the first when Luke Ayling’s header was called out by the VAR, and the second when Raphinha was offside before slotting home.
They grabbed the lead after Bamford hammered home at the close post from a cross by Jack Harrison.
Fulham equalized after defender Joachim Andersen volleyed in Ademola Lookman’s corner for his first goal in English football.
But Leeds prevailed shortly before the hour mark when Bamford served Raphinha, who beat two defenders before poking home.
“I just need to keep trying to see how I can get my name in Euros,” Bamford told Sky Sports. “If I keep on like this, I hope I’ll have a chance. If you told me at the beginning of the season that I’d be associated with England, I’d presume you were nuts.
It will come if it comes.” If not, I’ll know I gave it my all. I suppose it was in the back of my mind a little bit. It gives you a little more fuel in your belly.”
Leeds is now 11th in the league, with 39 points behind Marcelo Bielsa.
