Gareth Southgate revealed that his England team needs to improve to do well at Euro 2020. England ended their warm-up with an unconvincing 1-0 win against Romania. The side had wholesale changes from the side that beat Austria, nine in total. Three players who will not play in Euro 2020 were given an opportunity. Marcus Rashford scored a second-half penalty for the only goal of the game. Romania have not qualified for Euro 2020 and sits at a lowly 43 in the rankings.
“I don’t think we were as good as we want to be, or that we need to be,” England boss Gareth Southgate said. “In the first half we used the ball reasonably well, our best moments were coming down the left, we needed to get the ball from right to left more urgently.”
“We were a bit slow moving the ball, and in the final third we didn’t quite select the right pass or ran into traffic when we had a chance to create clearer opportunities.” he added. “We didn’t do enough without the ball in the first half, especially our pressing from the front. That meant we were stretched, and we have to learn from that. We’ll play against better teams who will carve us apart.”
Jordan Henderson, England’s captain could have doubled the hosts advantage but failed to convert the penalty kick. Southgate revealed he expected Dominic Calvert-Lewin to take the spot kick. The first two penalty takers, Rashford and James Ward-Prowse were off the field when the penalty was taken. Henderson later laughed off the penalty miss.
“I’ve missed bigger penalties than that, but I’m disappointed of course,” Henderson said. “I felt more sorry for Dom, he let me have it, but unfortunately I couldn’t find the goal. I’m not fussed, I’m just happy to be back.”
