Getafe missed the opportunity to gain an edge in the chase of the LaLiga Champions League, as they played a 0-0 stalemate for Espanyol basement boys at home.
In the early stages of the game, in a mostly uninspired affair, the European hopefuls have failed to take advantage of the away side going down to ten men. With only 15 minutes of play on Espanyol’s Luis Montero, Bernardo Espinosa was given a straight red for a challenge.
After a first-half goal by striker Carlos Bacca, Villarreal kept alive their hopes of claiming a Europa League qualifying berth, giving them a 1-0 home win over struggling Mallorca in La Liga on Tuesday. The result put Villarreal up on 44 points from 29 games to seventh, two behind sixth-placed Atletico Madrid with a game in hand.
Mallorca finished 18th on 25 points, as defeat dented their hopes to avoid relegation.
A darting run and cross from Samuel Chukwueze left Bacca in the 16th minute at the far post with a simple tap-in from two meters after Idrissu Baba of Mallorca rattled the crossbar at the other end with a 30-meter thunderbolt.
The lively Chukwueze fired wide after a solo run shortly after the break and visiting goalkeeper Manolo Reina saved a shot by Manuel Trigueros before missing a golden opportunity to equalize Mallorca.
Substitute Aleksandar Trajkovski ‘s fine footwork and cross left Juan Hernandez open on the far post but the forward sliced his shot wide from six meters with the goal at his fingertips.
