In the latest highlights from the new book about FC Bayern by Bild reporter Christian Falk, the seasoned source revealed that Pep Guardiola eventually refused to extend his contract because the club did not sign the superstar players he desired for him.
“The transfer strategy of FC Bayern has been a misunderstanding from the get-go between Pep Guardiola and the club,” Bild writes.
The fact that Bayern talked to him out of Neymar, as Falk puts it, convinced him to take Mario Götze “hurt him long in his mind.” Guardiola always wanted Bayern to sign Luis Suárez from Liverpool — at the time it cost €40 million instead of the €80 that Barcelona paid.
Falk further writes, “The Guardiola dreamed of players like Paul Pogba, Marco Verratti, Eden Hazard, Kevin de Bruyne and Raheem Sterling during his time at Bayern. Michael Reschke, then-technical director of Bayern, offered him players such as Gonzalo Castro or Hakan Calhanoglu. Nay, thank you.
