India could resume its qualifying campaign for the 2022 World Cup on October 8, as they take on Qatar, Goal understands.

India will then face Bangladesh away from home on October 13, according to the preliminary schedule worked out by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), while its last group stage fixture against Afghanistan will likely be played on November 17.

The aforementioned matches were scheduled for March and June until the Coronavirus pandemic stopped all sporting activities worldwide.

FIFA has yet to rubber-stamp the fresh dates and the AFC awaits official confirmation. It should be noted that the final decision also depends on the situation of Coronavirus and the travel regulations, as applicable to each country. India is currently placed fourth in Group E with three points from five matches. Qatar tops the table with 13 points while Oman is hot with 12 points on their heels.

Eight group winners and four best runners-up progress to the 12-team final qualification stage for the 2022 World Cup on the continent.

India is practically out of contention for the top two slots but the Blue Tigers are well within reach of a third-place finish. That’ll book them a direct berth for the Asian Cup Qualifiers in the third round of 2023.

India lost narrowly to Oman at home before pulling a goalless draw to hold Asian champions Qatar. Two more draws followed the inspiring result and a loss against Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Oman, respectively.
