Jorginho stepped up to slot the winning penalty home for Italy against Spain in the semifinals of Euro 2020 at Wembley. They will now take on either England or Denmark in Sunday’s Wembley showdown. Spain dominated the entire game with more than 70 percent of the possession as well as had the better chances. For all their domination, they could not find the back of the net. It was the Italians who scored first from a counter-attack with Federico Chiesa scoring with a neat finish.

Alvaro Morata was benched for the first time at Euro 2020, came off the bench to score the equalizer just minutes before the full-time whistle. He however turned from hero to zero when he missed a crucial penalty in the shootout. Jorginho then stepped up to slot the decisive penalty home. Italy have now gone 33 games unbeaten.

Managers Reaction

Italy boss Roberto Mancini: “We’re delighted to have been able to provide this wonderful evening’s entertainment to the Italian people. We still have one game to go and we want to do exactly that if possible.” Mancini said after Italy beat Spain. ”We knew it was going to be a very tough match because in terms of ball possession, Spain are the best around and they would cause us problems.”

Spain boss Luis Enrique: “It’s not a sad night for me, not at all. Of course, there is a disappointment but that’s football.” he added. ”You have to be able to win and lose. We were very pleased to win the shoot-out in the quarter-finals but we have to congratulate our opponents. I said at the start we were one of eight teams that could win the title, I wasn’t wrong about that. We go home knowing we competed and were one of the best teams at the competition.”
