The UEFA medical officer is skeptical about the resumption of major football tournaments this season. “It’s not a matter of money; it’s a matter of life and death.” This would seem to be contrary to the official UEFA position, which is to allow domestic tournaments to reach a logical conclusion, even if it means modifying the playoff format.

The French Government announced this afternoon that only September, when Belgium, the Netherlands, and Argentina announced the end of the 2019-20 season, will League 1 and 2 play again.

“We are all subject to decision by the public authorities at the national level. This is clear. Suddenly, football doesn’t become the most important thing in life, “EUFA medical chief D’Hooghe told The Daily Telegraph.”I’ll be happy if we can conveniently launch the next championship, and have nothing before next season begins.

“If they could launch the 2020-21 season at the end of August or the beginning of September I’d be satisfied. Then hopefully they could prevent a second virus attack which is not impossible.

“At the moment everyone has to be very cautious. For several countries I have learned they’re talking about playing football again, with or without the press.

“I’ve seen many cases in my long career where there’s been an economic-health balance. Mostly the economies won, whether it was about altitude jetlag or football or in extreme conditions like pollution situations.

“When there is one case where scientific arguments against economic arguments will prevail, it is now. It is not about money, it is about life and death. It’s quite easy. “The Bundesliga appears to be at a more advanced planning stage, as it should have resumed on May 9, while the A series is scheduled for June 2.

Medical guidelines have been written but the FIGC one has not been deemed satisfactory and needs to be revised before it can be reassessed.

D’Hooghe warned that some areas of sport are making the infection spread, like coughing and nose-blowing, especially risky.
