Erling Haaland returned to his best as Borussia Dortmund saw off RB Leipzig on Matchday 15 and the outstanding play of the Norwegian caught the attention of Jürgen Klinsmann, a former Bundesliga great who knows a thing or two about scoring goals himself.

His first Bundesliga goals since Matchday 8 were Haaland’s brace in the 3-1 win at the Red Bull Arena, having returned from injury the previous week in the 2-0 win over Wolfsburg.

From only 10 top-flight appearances this season, they not only brought the 20-year-old to 12 goals but also stopped Leipzig from going top, thus putting BVB in the second position within three points of their hosts and five of Bayern Munich in the top spot.

Last year, Haaland’s two-goal heroics were repeated in the same fixture and Klinsmann – who lifted the Meisterschale as a player with Bayern and scored 110 Bundesliga goals himself – was left ringing with the match-winning performance of the young Dortmund striker.

“In this game, Haaland left his mark. Not only did he score two lovely goals, but he also fought alone against the entire Leipzig defensive line. That was very, very impressive,’ said Klinsmann, who also coached Bayern, USA, and Hertha Berlin, most recently, to ESPN.

It seems like he’s becoming better from month to month and he’s becoming more of a guy. He’s growing up and he’s a very special athlete.

Haaland was nothing short of a revelation in Black and Yellow a year after making the move to Dortmund – scoring 25 times in 25 Bundesliga matches and 35 in 34 matches for the club in all competitions.

This kind of return to goalscoring has certainly not gone unnoticed and Klinsmann – a winner of the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship with Germany – believes that Haaland can ignore the added attention that his remarkable achievements carry with them, convinced that Dortmund is the perfect place to continue his stratospheric development.

“There’s hope in Dortmund to win trophies, they’re a very ambitious club, it’s a big club,” Klinsmann said.
