Having established a deal for Timo Werner, Chelsea has been urged to compete with Liverpool for another reported transfer target, with Frank Leboeuf saying Napoli’s defender Kalidou Koulibaly at Stamford Bridge would “fit very well.”

After two windows of no activity, the Blues are very much back in the market for top talent with a transfer ban keeping their hands tied.

The first to be targeted was Hakim Ziyech, as Frank Lampard swooped to snap the Ajax international winger from Morocco. For RB Leipzig striker Werner, a £54 million move (€60m/$68 m) has now been made, with other Premier League suitors fended off to close on the highly-rated Germany international.

With so far focused on the final third, it may be that attention now shifts to defensive matters. If that proves to be the case, then Leboeuf feels that Chelsea needs to add international Senegal Koulibaly to their wish list.

Liverpool could once again be confronted in that search, with the Reds being said to be keen on the center-half commanding, but Roman Abramovich is making the funds available to allow those in Western London to compete on the recruitment front.

Speaking with ESPN FC about potential clubs for Koulibaly, former Chelsea defender Leboeuf said:

“For many reasons, I will never ask him to go to Manchester United. I want him to win some stuff and I don’t think that Manchester United is the club they used to be and they aren’t ready to win things. I think Liverpool would fit well with [Virgil] van Dijk, that would be fantastic. Paris Saint-Germain as well as Marquinhos would have two great central defenders. I think Chelsea ‘s going to need such a player. I don’t know if Koulibaly’s going to be involved, but even though they have two very good central defenders, I think Koulibaly belongs to a different level and will suit very well.”
