According to Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni, Lautaro Martinez will need to win his place in Barcelona if he leaves Inter.

Following his exploits in Italy, Martinez was tipped to swap Serie A side Inter for La Liga champions Barca in the off-season.

The Argentina international forward scored 16 goals in 31 matches in all competitions before the coronavirus pandemic halted the 2019-20 season.

Martinez has been hailed as an ideal replacement for Luis Suarez, who turned 33-year-old in January due to his performances in Serie A.

The international team-mate of Martinez, Lionel Messi, praised the young striker, although the Barca icon insisted that he was not privy to any negotiations between his club and Inter.

Martinez ‘s international team-mate, Lionel Messi, commended the young striker, though the Barca icon insisted that he was not privy to any talks between his club and Inter.

Carlos Pablo, president of the former Liniers de Bahia Blanca club of the Argentine striker, insisted that the deal was about to be done, but he said that the move of Martinez from Inter to Barcelona was “practically closed.”

In the midst of the transfer speculation, Scaloni was asked about the future of Martinez and the Argentine boss said to Radio La Red: “If Lautaro goes to Barcelona, I think the coach [Quique Setien] will look for a way to get him started, he’ll have to sacrifice and earn his place.”

Scaloni feels it’s not going to be easy to take Lautaro out of Inter and he’d like Lautaro Martinez to play, to have continuity.

In 2018 Martinez swapped Racing Club for Inter and quickly established himself as one of the most sought-after forwards in European football, forming a strong partnership for the Italian side this season with Romelu Lukaku.

He’s scored a total of 25 goals since joining Inter from Racing Club, with the Italian side now sitting second behind Juventus in Serie A.
