On Tuesday, there was good news for Barcelona, as it was reported that Lionel Messi would only miss two suspended matches.
Late in extra-time of Sunday’s Spanish Supercopa, Messi was given a red card for throwing a punch at Athletic Bilbao striker Asier Villalibre, and his ban may have ranged from two to 12 matches, but the most likely outcome was always less than four.
Barcelona reports speculated on the club appealing for the duration of the ban if there were three or more matches, as per Marca, but that would no longer be necessary.
Messi will sit out this week’s Copa del Rey clash against Cornella’s Segunda B outfit, while next weekend he will also skip the league trip to struggling Elche.
Ironically, against Athletic Bilbao, he will return to the fold for the ensuing La Liga match.
In his 753rd appearance for the club, it was the player’s first red card for the Blaugrana.
