Liverpool moved one point closer to securing a first Premier League championship after maintaining a disappointing 0-0 draw on neighbors to Everton.

The Reds hoped to secure the first of two victories they needed to make sure they were crowned champions but struggled to break down a stubborn Blues defense.

Roberto Firmino and Joel Matip both lost good openings in the first half while the visitors upped the ante after the break without Jordan Pickford being truly tested.

Everton rarely challenged before the final 10 minutes when Tom Davies had a follow-up come back off the far post. Results push Liverpool away from Manchester City by 23 points. On Wednesday, when they welcome Crystal Palace to Anfield, the Reds will aim to take yet another major step towards a first title in 30 years.

After stretching their winless league to four matches, Everton gets to the 12th spot. When they travel to rock-bottom Norwich, they’ll hope to pick up a much-needed win.
