Liverpool is expected to negotiate with Georginio Wijnaldum a contract extension of at least three years following successful negotiations. The midfielder deal expires in June 2021 and he is keen to remain in Liverpool, which he joined in 2016 from Newcastle.

The Dutch international, who will be 30 in November, is in line for a 2024 or 2025 deal, with salaries not expected to be a stumbling block.

Until entering into negotiations to prolong his tenure at Anfield, Wijnaldum needed guarantees that he would continue to be considered a key player. He has played in the Premier League twenty-eight times this season to help Liverpool close in 30 years to a first top-flight win.

The news comes as another Liverpool midfielder, Adam Lallana, has announced that he has agreed to a short-term contract extension to finish the Anfield season.

The current contract for the 32-year-old was due to expire on June 30 but England international agreed to stay on and be part of the expected title celebrations for Liverpool.

Lallana told the official website of Liverpool: “I’m pleased to have the opportunity to finish this season-it means a lot to me and my family. One of the big personal positive things about committing to this short-term extension is, of course, that I will now be able to say goodbye to the people who mean so much to me in the right way.”

Coach J├╝rgen Klopp added: “I know how much Adam is sought-after at the moment by other clubs who want him for next season, but for him, this is a pledge to us and we thank him so much for it. It is exactly how it should be, too, and I am so happy that he will be with us this season to finish the job and have the goodbye he deserves so much.
