Riyad Mahrez, a winger of Manchester City, made it known that Liverpool was interested in his signature, but pulled the plug when Mohamed Salah joined Roma in 2017.

It proved to be a smart decision for the Reds, with the Egyptian winger scoring 91 goals in 144 games as the Merseysiders won the title of the 2018/2019 Champions League and looking forward to winning their first title of the Premier League in 30 years.

While, the 29-year-old Mahrez was on Leicester City’s books from 2014 to 2018, making a total of 179 appearances, scoring 48 goals and providing 38 assists.

Raised in the Paris suburb of Sarcelles, Mahrez has played for the Desert Foxes 57 times, scoring 17 times since his 2014 debut. He is also the 2016 African Footballer of the Year award winner.

Leicester was reluctant to sell Mahrez and could retain him for another season, but once it became clear that he had little interest in remaining at the King Power Stadium, the East Midlands club had little choice but to accept the bid from Man City.

“There was interest in Liverpool for me before signing in Manchester City, but as soon as they took Mo Salah, it was over,” Mahrez told DZ Foot in an Instagram Live interview.

Having a hand in 47 goals (21 goals, 26 assists) in 81 competitive outings, Mahrez has found more success in Manchester City, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup (two), and Community Shield during his tenure so far.

Mahrez also revealed that he had the chance to represent France but chose Algeria instead.

“If I had been waiting for France, I would have been there in the France team, but I chose Algeria directly. I had just signed for Leicester, I was told that Vahid [former Algerian coach Vahid Halilhodzic] loves me, the World Cup is there!” Continued Mahrez.
